The dress can be made sleeveless and finished with bias binding or gathered sleeves can be added in three lengths. The sleeves are drawn in at the ends with elastic.

– BIAS BINDING: This pattern assumes you are making your own bias binding and cutting layout diagrams allow for this. Hence, the pattern piece for the underarm bias was drafted with self-made bias in mind. Since the amount of stretch varies between store bought and self-made, you may like to cut after attaching the bias if using store bought. Use the underarm bias pattern piece as a guide.
– BUTTONS: If you are sewing the three quarter waist casing, you will need two 2 – 2.5mm (1”) diameter buttons to decorate the front of the dress.
– WAIST: 2.5 – 3cm (1”-1 ¼”) width elastic, from 40 to 70 cm depending of your child measurements and if you chose or not the three quarter waist casing option.
– SLEEVES: Use 8mm (1/3”) width elastic, from 26 to 43 cm depending of your child measurements and if you chose short or long sleeves
The Finch dress is primarily designed to be made with lightweight woven fabrics, although lightweight stretch fabrics can also be used.
For the dress with three quarter and long sleeves, these fabrics are recommended for the best effect: rayon, cotton lawn, liberty, tencel, chambray, cotton jersey and double gauze.
The lighter weight fabrics suit the full elasticized waist while quilting weight cottons are best suited to the three quarter elasticized waist to allow the dress to hold its shape at the front.
